One of our donors recently received this email from a personal friend. This is an excellent example (one of many) of how your support of Harvest House has a direct impact on so many lives.
“Dear (Anonymous Donor),
I have noticed that one of your charities is the Harvest House.
My granddaughter has been addicted to opioids since high school. She is now 24. She had two sons at the time the state took custody away from her because of her addiction and awarded it to my son, her father.
I’ve tried for years to get her sober. Four separate times she promised me she would enter the Harvest House Freedom program. Each time Harvest House said they would make room for her, but she would never show up. It broke my heart.
In April, she discovered she was once again pregnant and went to detox in another city in Florida.
Harvest House accepted her into the program and this time she enrolled. She was made “House Mom” last month because of her progress and sobriety. She will be graduating from the program this month.
She gave birth to a son 2 weeks ago. She was planning on adopting him out as she will be getting custody of her other two boys soon and did not think she could not give them all the lives they deserved.
The adopting couple did not show up at the hospital when the baby was born, rather, they called the adoption agency and told them they were out of town, and to just “put the baby in foster care until we return to Sarasota”.
After this happened, my granddaughter refused to let them adopt. She said if they couldn’t show up to greet their child, then she didn’t trust them to be there for him during his life. So, she now has 3 sons. She and the newest son are staying with me, her other two sons are still with my son in Sarasota until she gains custody back. She has to find housing that she can afford for herself and her 3 sons.
She has been working for a doctor in town for a few months now. She loves her job and they seem to like her very much. They were understanding about her pregnancy and held her position open for her.
I wanted you to know what a great agency the Harvest House is. I cannot express how happy I am that my granddaughter is sober, well, and above all, smiling and laughing again. It’s been a long time since this has been true. I have faith that is forever now. She loves her children and realizes now what drugs have done to her, her sons and her family.
It is because of people like you that these kids who have lost their way in life get back on track. Her life will be tough for a while, but I have no doubt that because of Harvest House she will succeed in her sobriety and her future. She and her sons will be moving into a supportive housing apartment at Harvest House to continue working with a case manager to further develop her skills as a mom in recovery and to learn how to do life with her three boys in ways that will create a safe, nurturing environment for the family.
Thank you for your giving and caring.”
